What is Hacktoberfest?
Hacktoberfest is an annual event held each October with the aim of getting people from around the world to contribute to open source and contribute positively to the community. This October, several members of the team at Coderus collaborated on a project in Github.
Open to everyone, participants must register at the beginning of the month and make four valid pull requests by the end of the month. The first 70,000 participants who complete this task win a prize – a choice of a Hacktoberfest t-shirt or a tree.
What was Coderus’ Hacktoberfest project?
The initial work was to set up a project that would be easy for any member of the team, regardless of which development platform they are comfortable on, to hop in and provide some assistance.
The project was an Android application that would pull various parts of information about the Android handset. This can be useful in debugging issues specific to certain manufacturers or models, as with thousands of different combinations this can become quite troublesome if an issue arises on only one or two handsets.
The team started off with creating the project and setting up the basic structure, making it so that people could fork the repo, create a new class and provide the required information quickly. To aid with the team contributing, we put some CI using GitHub actions into place, that on a PR would attempt to run any tests or static analysis tools.
Several members of the team who participated in Hacktoberfest this year were able to complete all four pull requests by the end of the month and will have t-shirts to celebrate this achievement arriving in the post shortly.
